In the Capital Region, winter has a way of keeping us indoors. The holidays blur together, routines get off track, and suddenly it’s hard to feel “new” when your home still feels like last year. As a locally owned cleaning company serving Albany, Clifton Park, Troy, and the surrounding Capital District, we see this every January.
The truth is, a New Year reset doesn’t start with scrubbing. It starts with organizing.
Start Where the Overflow Lives
Before buying anything, open the spaces that quietly stress you out:
Under the bathroom sink
Vanity drawers
The pantry
The hallway closet with random sheets and towels
Under the kitchen sink
If you already had a system and it’s overflowing, that’s normal. Resetting these areas can genuinely make you feel like a new person. Many of us have been living with overfilled bins for an entire year without realizing how much mental space it takes up.
A few simple organizer bins can completely change how these spaces function. It may take a couple of hours, but the result is worth it.
A Simple Trick for Cluttered Homes (Especially With Kids)
If you have kids, clutter can feel overwhelming. One of our favorite tricks is to keep a small laundry basket in each room while organizing.
As you go through the room, anything that doesn’t belong there goes straight into the basket
Focus on organizing only the items that do belong in that room first
Once the room is tidy, you can redistribute the items in the basket to their proper places
Taking this first step — even if it seems small — makes a huge difference. The key is to never leave a room with items out of place. Putting them in the basket keeps momentum going and helps you feel less overwhelmed.
Reset the Pantry (Including the Lazy Susan)
This is one of the most satisfying resets you can do at the start of the year.
Throw out expired cans and food
Wipe down shelves
Reorganize the Lazy Susan
Group items by category
A refreshed pantry makes daily life easier. You waste less food, find what you need faster, and feel calmer every time you open the door.
Declutter What You Don’t Use — and Actually Donate It
Going through clothing and household items at the start of the year feels good. Let go of what no longer fits your life.
Then follow through. Donate it.
Do not leave the bag in your car for months. Completing the donation is part of the reset.
Put Things Away Like You Care About Your Future Self
Once the clutter is gone, invest in storage that works with you instead of against you:
Clear, label-friendly bins
Containers that snap shut and stay closed
Ziploc bags for small décor and knickknacks
This is especially helpful when putting away seasonal items or holiday décor. Your future self will thank you next year.
Organizing Is a Mental Reset Too
Resetting drawers, closets, and cabinets does more than make your home look better. It makes your home feel manageable again.
If you already had a system that stopped working, that doesn’t mean you failed. It means your life changed. Updating your organization systems is part of moving forward.
Daily Tidying Matters More Than Deep Cleaning

Try doing a daily reset of:
The kitchen, with dishes done and counters wiped
The bathrooms, with items put back and a quick wipe
Even without a deep clean, these small resets help your home feel calm, controlled, and under control.
