(Albany • Clifton Park • Troy • Capital District NY)

Once your home is organized, the next step in a true New Year reset is making sure the systems that keep your home running are clean too.

As a locally owned cleaning company serving Albany, Clifton Park, Troy, and the surrounding Capital District, we see this all the time. Homes can look tidy on the surface, but if the machines, filters, and hidden areas are neglected, your home never truly feels fresh.

These are the resets we recommend every January.

Clean the Dishwasher (Yes, It Has a Filter)

Most people do not realize their dishwasher has a filter — and it collects food, grease, and buildup over time.

Here’s what to do:

  • Remove the dishwasher filter and rinse it thoroughly

  • Use a flashlight to check for buildup or debris

  • Run a cleaning cycle using A-Fresh dishwasher cleaning tablets

A clean dishwasher works better, smells better, and actually cleans your dishes the way it’s supposed to.

Reset Your Washing Machine

If your washer has ever smelled musty, it is overdue for a reset.

  • Run A-Fresh washing machine cleaning tablets through an empty cycle

  • Wipe down the rubber gasket and detergent drawer

  • Leave the door open after use to allow airflow

This small task makes a huge difference in how fresh your laundry smells.

Change Your HVAC or Air Circulation Filter

During Capital Region winters, our homes are closed up more than usual. That means clean air matters.

  • Replace your HVAC or air circulation filter

  • Choose the correct size and rating for your system

  • Mark the date so you know when it’s time to change it again

Clean filters improve airflow, reduce dust, and help your heating system run more efficiently.

Clean the Trash Cans Throughout Your Home

Trash cans quietly collect odors and bacteria.

A simple reset:

  • Spray the inside with a disinfectant

  • Rinse them out in the bathtub or outside

  • Let them dry fully before replacing liners

While you’re at it, move the trash can and clean the floor behind it. This alone can make a kitchen or bathroom feel noticeably cleaner.

Don’t Forget the Shoe Tray and Entryway

Winter in Upstate New York means salt, dirt, and moisture get tracked inside.

  • Empty and wash the shoe tray

  • Wipe down the surrounding floor area

  • Let everything dry completely before putting shoes back

A clean entryway sets the tone for the rest of your home.

Clean Behind and Under Appliances

These are the places dust, crumbs, and buildup love to hide.

Focus on:

  • Behind the refrigerator

  • Under the stove

  • Behind the washer and dryer

Even if you only tackle one appliance, it makes a difference.

Why These Resets Matter

Clean machines and filters help your home:

  • Smell fresher

  • Function better

  • Stay healthier

  • Feel truly clean instead of just tidy

These are the details professional cleaners pay attention to — and they are often the reason a home feels different after a deep reset.

Finish With Organization

Before tackling machine resets, we always recommend organizing first. Clearing clutter makes these systems easier to access and maintain.
